The Ice Cube Analogy

Updated: Mar 28, 2023

Have you set a training goal and gotten frustrated?  Do you feel like you’ve been working really hard, but you still haven’t seen any results?  I was feeling this way about my push-ups when a friend told me something she read recently.

It’s called the Ice Cube Analogy from the book she is reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.  In it, he writes,

“Complaining about not achieving success despite working hard is like complaining about an ice cube not melting when you heated it from twenty-four to thirty-one degrees.  However, a one degree shift, seemingly no different than the temperature increases before it, has unlocked a huge change.”

Each step is important and necessary to get where you need to go.

Think about your training goals. There is value in the journey. Be patient, give yourself some grace, and keep working hard.
