What brought you to Dragonfly? I wanted to get stronger. I love sports, hiking, and staying active in general, but in recent years, I’ve been dealing with a lot of minor injuries and just wasn’t feeling great overall. The internet was also trying really hard to convince me that all my muscles were going to evaporate when I turned forty. Really dumb, I

know, but those influencers be influencing. I started doing my own research on strength training, and I knew I needed some professional guidance in order to feel comfortable. I originally was just going to look for a trainer, but my googling led me to Dragonfly. It didn’t take many classes for me to figure out it was going to be a good fit.

Does the Dragonfly community play a part in your gym experience? The community at Dragonfly is truly wonderful. I have fun every class—well, maybe not every class,

because fitness sucks sometimes—but I always leave the gym feeling better than when I showed up. There is such an incredible range of bodies, ages, and personalities, and everyone is nothing but supportive of one another. I work alone most days, the hermit artist stereotype personified. My husband jokes that I need to go to the gym for the social interaction as much as for the muscles. He isn’t wrong. Also, I need to shout out the coaches. Y’all show up ready to lead and encourage everyone to do really

hard things every day. That sounds exhausting, lol. You’re also a great time and put up with some hefty sarcasm and eye-rolling from this member. Thank you!

What is something that used to be intimidating at the gym but now you love it and/or how might you encourage others that might be nervous about strength training?

I think I was intimidated by most of it at the start. It took some time to feel out new movements and get comfortable with lifting heavier and pushing myself. Coach says we’re all baby giraffes at the start of each new 8-week cycle, and it’s really true. There will be exercises where you surprise yourself with what you can do, and exercises where you are truly humbled. The great part of Dragonfly is that if you show up, you can just be wherever you’re at, and that is fine. Trainers are always there with a modification or

different option that makes sense. I’ve had days where my body wasn’t body’ing, and stretching and easy mobility movements were all I could do. Those days really reaffirm why I love it here.

Congrats Carries, and thank you for being such a great member! We are glad your googling led you here!

Each month Dragonfly coaches nominate members who are standing out, overcoming obstacles, and giving it their all. It’s always a hard choice to decide upon one!
